The Legend of the League

Work. School. Life. A small group of photographers found that too many things were getting in the way of letting them practice their art. “How sad we are,” they said to one another, “that we have nothing to make personal photography for fun and enjoyment a larger part of our lives.” Then, one bright and sunny day, they had an epiphany: “We have blogs” they said, “and we have each other!”

So they banded together as a brotherhood to indulge their creative curiosity, believing that photos – all photos — have a story to tell. They stand behind the lens of their cameras, poised to tell their visual stories, and united under the banner of a single blog as The League of a Thousand Words. Their mission is to each post one photo per week — each on a different day — bringing photography into their lives on a regular basis, and a week of photos to everyone else. Together they shall show mankind just how photogenic life is.

If photography can be described as drawing with light, then I have been an artist since I was a small girl wielding a blue plastic Fischer Price camera. Now I have a big, fancy black Nikon D80, and I challenge myself to take photographs that make others stop and really look at the image — to see the ordinary in an unforeseen yet extraordinary way.

A self-taught artist, I started seriously studying photography as an artistic medium in 2006. I have a strong academic and professional background in math and computer science, as well as a deep-rooted personal interest in the biological sciences, all of which lead me to take an analytical, detail-oriented approach to photography. My typical work ranges from macro nature photography to still life setups for experimenting with camera techniques and composition.

With a strong background in design, printmaking, drawing and painting, I tend to shy away from calling myself a photographer and think of myself instead as an artist who likes to take pictures. A lot of pictures. I use my camera as an instant sketchbook, making studies, taking visual notes, exploring possibilities, and telling untold stories.
